Emerging Media Project Management (JRMC 7011E) Summer 2022

Emerging Media Project Management is the first class in which we started to talk about our capstone project. While we learned a lot of great things regarding Sprints and agile methodology, the main idea that I wanted to focus on in my course summary is the capstone project. For the final project of this class, we were tasked with coming up with three ideas, one of which would become our capstone.

After struggling with ideas for a few days, my partner Conor and I decided to come up with three ideas that I think could carry us far. Our first idea, which was my original idea was a Gaming List. The Gaming list would be similar to MyAnimeList and Goodreads, however instead of ranking and keeping track of what animes or books you read, My Gaming List, would keep track of the games that you are currently playing. The prototype for this design can be viewed here.

The next idea, which was Conor’s original idea was an app called Hot takes. Drawing on ideas from YikYak, Hot takes would allow community members to post what they are truly feeling and their “hot takes”. The prototype for this design can be found here.

Finally, our last idea which was a joint idea between the two of us was locally you. Locally you are another community-based app that would allow people to book activities and find activities within the local area that they are in. Similar to Airbnb experiences, locally you would allow you to connect with locals who have an activity planned for you, or post on a message board about an upcoming activity such as a block party. The prototype for this idea can be found here.

Personally, out of all the ideas that we have for our capstone project, I think that the Locally You one is the strongest. I feel that this is the strongest idea that the two of us have because I feel like there is a lot that we can add to this app and make it a really strong project. Additionally, I feel like our other two ideas would struggle with making themselves different than the apps that are already on the market.

While nothing has been finalized with our capstone project, 7011E has given us the first steps to begin thinking about what we want to dedicate the next two semesters to creating.

Overall, 7011E is a building block on my EM journey and the ideation skills that I have learned in this class are going to carry on with me for the next two semesters.
