New Media Production (NMIX 6110) Summer 2021

NMIX 6110 Course Summary

So far, the only NMIX course to date that I have completed is NMIX 6110, which means, this is my very first, course summary! NMIX 6110 was for sure a challenge, however, I am glad that it was the first course that I was able to take for my degree. Going into this course, I had previously taken a journalism coding course, so I was familiar with HTML and CSS, but looking back, what I learned through that entire semester is nothing on what I learned in 4ish weeks in this course. Previously, I was not overly confident when it came to using HTML/CSS, however, I can firmly say that I am a much better use after completing this course. The skills that I gained in this course go on, but to give a shortlist:

HTML/CSS

WordPress

Javascript

Bootstrap

Jquery

Overall, I really learned all of the basic skills that I will continue to build during my time as an EM student. I was able to exercise and better build these skills through the various projects that came along with this course. Each of the projects taught me something new, and overall I found them fun and engaging. I felt like I was actually learning something, as when it comes to web design, the best way to practice is to create stuff! As I continue my EM journey, I know that I will use the skills that I learned in this class in a variety of ways. First off, these are the skills that will get me through the rest of my EM journey, and ideally, these are the skills that I will be using daily when I pursue my dream job as a UX/UI designer.

After completing this course, I think the project that I am most proud of is my bootstrap project. I think that this is the project that I am most proud of because it was my first time using bootstrap, and I really liked the way that bootstrap builds websites. However, I did find that it did take way more time than WordPress, and for that reason, I have chosen to use WordPress to build out my portfolio as it is much more user-friendly.

My bootstrap project

By completing this project, I was able to delve deeper into HTML and CSS. This was also my first time working with an open sourse library, and I have to say, it was super cool to see all of the projects that people have created through HTML and CSS. I think the reason that I enjoyed bootstrap so much, is that one day I hope that maybe I will be able to contribute to their open source library. I think by having my bootstrap project be the second one I completed, it allowed me to take the skills that I had previously learned through project one, and expand them beyond what I already knew. I am glad that the wordpress project was after the bootstrap unit, because I don’t think that I could have convinced myself to not use wordpress as it just makes the whole design process so much simpler! However, I do hope that I will be able to get faster at bootstrap and that one day it will be my go-to for designing websites.

Overall, I really enjoyed this course and I feel that I actaully understand coding now. I know that there is so much more for me to learn, but towards the end of my undergrad degrees, I felt that I wasn’t really inspired by the topics anymore, so I decided to pursue this masters degree. Even after completing just one course, I already feel as if I have learned so much, and I am looking forward to continue my journey as an EM student.
